Distribution 1566 - 1899

The earliest records I have come across so far are from Dean in Bedfordshire. We have a Thomas Moakes who was buried in 1566, age unknown, and a baptism for Elisabeth Moakes in 1569. Elizabeth was the daughter of Thomas so it is tempting to think that maybe the Thomas who was buried three years earlier was the infant son of this Thomas. In 1571 there is another Elisabeth - getting married. Perhaps she was Thomas sr's sister? However these are just my best guesses, nothing more. The last recorded record for Dean was in 1640. At roughly the same time as in Dean, 1576, records started cropping up in Eaton Socon about nine miles south east of Dean. Also records from 1578 were recorded in Howden, Yorkshire but these were for MOAKE. In 1604 MOAKES started showing in Lincolnshire and in 1605 there was one in Canterbury, Kent although this seems to have been a one off.

After peaking in Bedfordshire in the 17th century the drift then moved towards Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire and London, with Yorkshire staying fairly consistent.
