"Times", 8 June 1892, p 10, col d CHARGE OF MANSLAUGHTER AT BROMLEY, KENT Sunday morning last, about 11 o'clock, 2 young men, William Holmes and Albert Moakes, about 19 years old, butchers assistants, of Bromley, were shooting at glass bottles with catapults. Edward Houlgate, upholsterer, heard the noise and went to remonstrate with them. The lads became abusive, and Holmes shot at Houlgate, who retaliated with several slaps across the face. Houlgate followed the lads to their employer's establishment, where Holmes hit him with a broom, and both left leaving Houlgate on the ground bleeding profusely..... Houlgate returned home bleeding, and despite a doctor's attention, died from loss of blood. Holmes was charged with manslaughter and remanded.
